DOUBLE SIDE

We are proud to host the new Aterballetto production in Fonderia, Reggio Emilia.

Shadow and light, live music and contemporary dance combine in Double Side, the new co-production of the Fondazione Nazionale della Danza/Aterballetto and Parma’s Fondazione Arturo Toscanini: a research and adventure that the two institutions share, and not for the first time, with the aim of “making choreographic and musical components react” in new and meaningful ways. On stage are two opposite poles represented by Stabat Mater by the Cuban choreographer Norge Cedeño Raffo and With drooping wings by Canadian Danièle Desnoyers, and held together by a vivid aesthetic architecture designed by Fabiana Piccioli.
The dark, gloomy atmosphere associated with Arvo Pärt’s moving, religious music is enhanced by Norge Cedeño Raffo’s expressive, free and pure dance: a hymn to the beauty of movement. The extrovert imprint and light, clear encapsulated in the nine iridescent musics of Henry Purcell recomposed for a string quartet by Federico Gon, flow from the dance of Danièle Desnoyers. There is always a strong relationship, almost a deep friendship, between her and the music: the gesture is not overwhelmed by the famous Baroque scores, but tries to create interesting harmonies and disharmonies with the strings on stage.

Cuban Norge Cedeño Raffo creates to religious music. The up-and-coming young choreographer was a soloist with Danza Contemporánea de Cuba, Cuba’s leading contemporary company. Arvo Pärt’s “Stabat Mater” becomes a painful farewell work for him. The Estonian composer set the medieval text about the sorrow of the Mother of God to music in his characteristic reduced style. The moving effect of this music also characterizes the expressive, free and, in the most beautiful sense, pure dance: how can one find hope in a broken world and after such a great loss, how can one go on living, Norge Cedeño Raffo asks himself in his work.

Choreographer Danièle Desnoyers comes from Montréal, the metropolis of Canadian modern dance, where her light, fluid style and company make her a fixture on the contemporary scene. In addition to the theatrical element, her creations always have a strong relationship with music. His creation for Aterballetto is based on a suite by Italian composer Federico Gon, a specialist in baroque music who was inspired by Henry Purcell.
