In 1991 in Reggio Emilia (Italy), organised by the Centro Regionale per la Danza, 20 young dancers and creators were selected for a specialised course on American Modern and Post-Modern Dance. Their teachers were exceptional names in dance such as Alwin Nikolais, Iréne Hultmann (Trisha Brown Dance Company), Louise Burns (Merce Cunningham Dance Company) and guests of the calibre of William Forsythe and Carolyn Carlson.

It was an experiment unique of its kind and never repeated since. The group studied various techniques of American Dance, the Cunningham repertoire and the Trisha Brown repertoire, but above all it experimented under the guidance of those masters or in independent sessions.

Thus a group took shape that wished to experiment with new artistic trends and that, after that experience, scattered across the world.

In 2024, after 33 years, 13 artists belonging to that original nucleus came together again spontaneously and, as if picking up a conversation left unfinished, resumed meeting in the rehearsal studio, following their natural inclination for experimentation with dance and choreography. The name chosen for this new informal ensemble is La Réunion, a name that certainly evokes a coming together, but also a remote island, a dimension where something specific, new and native lives and evolves — something that can happen only in that place, yet always open to exploration and exchange.
