DÉSIR MIMÉTIQUE is a playful investigation into choreographic composition curated by Jacopo Jenna. The title is a free reference to the concept of “mimetic desire” theorised by the French anthropologist René Girard, who argued that human imitation lies at the root of many of the phenomena that characterise our behaviour. The project sets out to draw attention to the perception of certain elements linked to contemporary dance, starting from the concept of imitation as a basic element for the embodiment of dance and for cultural transmission, examining how particular kinds of information and qualities of movement are replicated or transferred from one person to another through a memetic process.
Within the workshop, then, a series of exercises is developed, focused on listening to the body and on the search for movement. Through the relationship with a series of static images, in which the body is represented in a particular form, various attempts at a mimetic relationship are explored, eliciting in the children different qualities of movement and physical representation.
