The New Italian Dance (NID) Platform is a project with the mission of supporting the best Italian dance production.
Established in 2012 through collaboration with various dance distribution houses (RTO), the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities’ Directorate General for Live Entertainment, and local organizations, the Platform places Italian and international companies and operators in contact in order to promote dialogue between production and distribution and grant greater visibility to the artistic quality of the Italian scene in the fullest respect of the plurality of languages and poetics.
The NID Platform presents the best companies and most exemplary performances on the Italian panorama with a careful selection of established names and emerging choreographers in a rich, articulated four-day program that also envisions opportunities for comparison and reflection, collateral events, and discussions of related topics.
The NID Platform is an experience through which professional collaboration between national and international production and distribution flourish: an operative format capable of expanding and renewing the dance market in Italy today and spreading awareness of the nation’s most relevant choreographic production among operators beyond its borders.
All its performances and collateral events are open to the public.
The 5th edition: October 10-13, 2019, Reggio Emilia
The 5th edition of the NID Platform has been awarded to ATER Circuito Regionale Multidisciplinare, Fondazione Nazionale della Danza / Aterballetto and Fondazione I Teatri di Reggio Emilia.
In addition to the customary programming of performances, one of the most significant innovations of the 2019 Edition will be “Open Studios”: a new section intended to offer both affirmed companies and emerging artists further opportunities to be part of the platform with dance projects that have not yet made their debut. This is their chance to intensify their research, face the critique of a discerning audience, and stand up to other professionals in the sector.
Another new feature will be the presence of the four dance production centers – a recent new category that gives an innovative impulse to the sector- which will propose samplings of their specific artistic identities.
The 2019 NID Platform program will be inserted in the wider context of the Festival Aperto promoted and organized by Fondazione I Teatri. This open window on Italian dance has always been a vital part of the festival with its program of succinct dialogue between music, theater, and dance and their ramifications into art, literature, and technology and contributed for over a decade now to the City of Reggio Emilia’s identity and vocation for the contemporary in a wider context of performing arts.
In addition to being co-organizers and hosting some events in the spaces of our Fonderia, the Fondazione Nazionale della Danza / Aterballetto presents at the NID Platform the recent creations of two young choreographers of the company, Philippe Kratz and Saul Daniele Ardillo, on Friday 11 October at Teatro Cavallerizza.
Taking part
Taking part in a showcase like NID Platform so radically different from the more usual Fondazione Nazionale della Danza/Aterballetto programming contexts, we emphasize various aspects of our change in progress. In two years, we have participated in projects with other disciplines and spaces, stimulating choreographic research in fields as diverse as dance for kids (where too little has yet been invested) while continuing to offer young choreographers opportunities in which they are not restricted to traditional markets, themes or formats.
Our NID presentation reflects this effort. Saul Daniele Ardillo worked for over a year with playwright Simone Giorgi and an extraordinary Reggio Children team in assimilating the experiences of Accademia Perduta | Romagna Teatri and, above all, the creative outlook of classes of children (La stella nascosta). The result is a dance performance for and by children – and everyone else as well, in the project’s deepest meaning. Ardillo himself also transformed a site-specific work developed with painter Jorge R. Pombo (Lost in) for the stage. We will also present Philippe Kratz’s short masterpiece entitled “O”, the winner of the Hannover Choreographic Competition. These paths diverge from a single work by the company (or a group selected for the occasion in La stella nascosta) and grow in increasingly closer dialogue with different artists, segments of society, and generations.
