In 2024, on the four-hundredth anniversary of Claudio Monteverdi’s madrigal Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda (1624–2024), the work was rediscovered by CCN/Aterballetto in its experimental and innovative nature, fundamental to the evolution of musical theatre. Monteverdi sought a more vital connection between word and music, moving beyond simple madrigalesque execution to create an expressive and engaging action. The theme of love overwhelmed by war, inspired by Torquato Tasso’s Jerusalem Delivered (whose first draft marks its 450th anniversary in 2025), retains a striking contemporary resonance.

CCN/Aterballetto interprets this legacy through dance—its privileged language to convey the intensity and drama of the work.

In co-production with Teatro Regio di Parma / Festival Verdi, Torinodanza Festival / Teatro Stabile di Torino – Teatro Nazionale, and Ghislierimusica, the project is conceived as a multidisciplinary experience with one significant added outcome: to cast a contemporary light on what are considered “sacred texts” of Italian cultural heritage.

The dancers’ bodies convey an intensity—at times even a violence—that speaks to our own historical moment. It is precisely physical action that can constitute a third level of perception, embodying the lines of instruments and voices, and completing the idea of representation that Monteverdi himself intuited within his work.
