Upcoming 2024: Notte Morricone by Marcos Morau

On 27th July at the Arena Sferisterio in Macerata we closed our 2022/23 season, but the Fondazione Nazionale della Danza / Aterballetto – National Choreographic Centre is already looking forward to new adventures, including NOTTE MORRICONE, the new production by visionary choreographer Marcos Morau that will debut at the Macerata Opera Festival in 2024.

Below is a short video in which Marcos Morau gives some first suggestions of the new imagery he wants to create with the music of Ennio Morricone.

I know it’s hard to separate the music of the movies from the image, to disconnect and It’s beautiful to listen the music of Morricone and imagine that this music can be isolated of everything, has a power in itself, and it describes itself and talks about itself without the need of being connected to the image. It’s my point of view.

And but, of course, at the same time this music is connected to stories, to characters, to feelings. His music is an abstraction that arrives where the words cannot. And this is the most important thing of his music. I’m trying to do this project supported by all these legacies that we lived in the history of cinema and the history of music. And that, I’m gonna try to do the same.

Try to generate new imaginary, new characters and new landscapes using his fabulous and his melancholy and his inspiring music.

Marcos Morau (Valencia, Spain, 1982) studied choreography at the Institut del Teatre de Barcelona, the Conservatorio Superior de Danza de Valencia and Movement Research in New York. He created his choreographic assistance project with Nederlands Dans Theater II and with the IT Dansa company directed by Catherine Allard. His artistic skills are not limited to dance but span disciplines such as photography and theatre. He constructs imaginary worlds and landscapes in which movement and imagery meet and merge.

In 2005, he founded his own company, La Veronal, of which he is still director, choreographer, set designer, light designer and costume designer. He has also directed performances for the National Dance Company of Spain, Scapino Ballet Rotterdam, Skånes Dansteater, Göteborg Operans Danskompani, Ballet de Lorraine and Carte Blanche Norway, Ballet de l’Opéra de Lyon, among others.

From the 2023/2024 season, he will be artist-in-residence at the Staatsballett Berlin
